We ourselves are enthusiastic about bamboo as an ecological raw material. However, Moso bamboo (also known as giant bamboo), which is suitable for toothbrush production, only grows in Asia and South America. Its import is associated with long transport routes and thus also high CO2 emissions, which ultimately severely diminish the ecological advantage of bamboo. In addition, there is a lack of transparency in the cultivation and processing of giant bamboo, which makes us convinced that the use of local and certified raw materials such as wood is the only ecologically correct way.
What kind of wood is used for the handles?
The handles of our Liebwerk toothbrushes are made of FSC-certified Swiss beech wood. Its hardness, durability and bending properties make beech wood the ideal raw material for the production of toothbrushes. Moreover, it is the best available hardwood species from sustainable forestry. The FSC wood comes mainly from Toggenburg (SG) and partly from the St. Gallen Rhine Valley and the Zurich Oberland.
